I want to continue elenacarlena’s discussion of gun violence and misogyny this week, particularly the relationship between gun culture and misogyny shown in two ways — the connection between gun violence (including mass shootings) and domestic violence, and, in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting, the relationship between gun sales, /gun culture and children,
The strong association between firearms, domestic violence (particularly intimate partner homicide), and additional victimization suggests that prioritization of measures to decrease access to firearms to perpetrators of domestic violence may also reduce the incidence of mass shootings. The majority of mass shootings are associated with domestic violence. The current study by Kivisto and Porter examines whether the use of a firearm in domestic homicide affects the risk that others will also be killed during the same incident. Earlier studies have demonstrated that domestic homicide often extends to additional victims linked to the primary perpetrator or victim, either through a preexisting relationship or through physical proximity to the violence. Based on a national surveillance database, Kivisto and Porter confirm findings from earlier, more limited studies. Firearm use is associated with an increased incidence of multiple homicide victimization, especially in domestic situations. This suggests that additional laws to prevent those who perpetrate domestic violence from purchasing or possessing firearms, and vigorous enforcement of new and existing laws, may decrease the incidence of mass shootings, whether additional victims are inside or outside the home.

Here’s something I wasn’t expecting when I started this diary —
“The shooting in Las Vegas a few years ago at a big music festival, or the shooting at the Orlando Florida nightclub,” Brauer said. “Those have not led to a really statistically noticeable increase in firearms demand and sales.”
However Brauer says experts believe the mass shootings involving young children seem to have the most association with increased gun sales. (Emphasis mine.)
. . .
“When you have a school shooting, the outrage is more popular than otherwise and more widespread than otherwise,” said Brauer. "Therefore you get more calls for firearms legislation. And then you have the reaction, that in response to those calls, and the fear that potentially new federal legislation may be passed, that then turns on the demand spike."

Which leads to stock prices soaring after the Uvalde school shooting.
But that relationship – a mass shooting followed by a spike in gun industry stocks – wasn’t always the case. My colleague Anand Gopal and I studied the impact of 93 mass shootings on the stock price of publicly listed firms from 2009 to 2013. We found that, contrary to what happens now, mass shootings in that period were followed by a drop in share price for Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger, the two gun companies still publicly listed in the U.S.
So why has that changed? The answer may lie in how hopes of legislation over tighter restrictions on gun sales have dwindled over the last decade. The takeaway is investors no longer seem to worry so much about the chances of tightening firearms regulation when assessing the long-term viability of gun manufacturers in the aftermath of mass shootings.

So maybe it’s all about money after all? The Republicans who have prevented gun safety legislation from passing in Congress, not to mention state legislatures that have passed many gun rights protection laws — I saw it here in Arizona — certainly are also determined to keep large amounts of dark money in campaign politics.
So there is money to be made when children are killed — not just in school shootings, but in domestic mass shootings.
Is that why more than 100 midterm political ads this year feature guns?

Doesn’t that fit nicely with all those people who shout about abortion killing babies?
It’s time for the mainstream media to start reporting the relationship between domestic abuse and mass shootings. And for police to take reports of abuse as the red flag they are.
