The earth sustains humanity. It must not be injured; it must not be destroyed.
—Hildegard of Bingen
Over the centuries, religious women have dreamed dreams. Saint Hildegard of Bingin had mystical visions of unbearable beauty which she illustrated such as the above All Creatures Celebrate Creation. Like St. Francis of Assisi, she found God reflected in nature.
In Hildegard’s worldview, a beam of sunlight, the fragrance of a flower, or the graceful movement of a swan were all participants in the holy chorus of creation. To be out of sync with the beauty and fecundity of nature is to deny the divine force which enlivens body and soul. She called this force viriditas, using the Latin word for “greenness.” She envisioned this “greening power” as a force that continually nourishes the earth and all its creatures. For Hildegard, the color green symbolized nature’s vibrancy, ripening, and eternal becoming. She made it clear that we are not separate from nature, but an intimate part of it. When she observed the wonder and splendor of nature, she saw a divine underpinning which sustained not only the earth, but the cosmos. “Creation is the song of God,” she said.

What form does a twenty-first century vision take? It depends a great deal on what kinds of visions such a world needs.
Molly Burhan’s vision rose out of her Catholic faith and her love of cartography and the possibilities of data-stacking GIS. She realized that the Catholic Church was one of the largest land owners globally with a vast diversity of landscapes which could be sustainably developed as a bulwark against the ravages of climate change and also protect vulnerable populations and work for social justice.
This brief video is a good introduction to this amazing young woman who is committed to helping Pope Francis manage Catholic lands.
Pope Francis is interested in her project and has invited her to lead a cartography department at the Vatican. Burhan has a proposal for how to bring that about; however, the Vatican has suffered a decline in revenue due to the closure of Vatican Museums during the pandemic, so that is on hold for now.
