The time at which people consider seasons “to have changed” often varies. For many people in the United States, Summer ‘unofficially’ begins on Memorial Day. For others, Summer begins on that last day of school, and means figuring out what kiddos will do until school begins! Some people divide the year into quarters by month, meaning June, July and August are “the Summer months”. And lastly, there’s those of us who mark Summer by the date of the Summer Solstice — which means Summer 2022 begins at 5:13am Eastern tomorrow!
Last year I did a summer music theme, and didn’t want to repeat that (although you are welcome to share your favorite summer-themed music in the comments!). Instead, my thoughts are drawn to the shifts I observe as I move from Spring to Summer:
- I find myself waking earlier, both because of earlier sunrises and because I want to take advantage of the comfortable morning temperatures.
- I spend a LOT more time outdoors. I might be walking either alone or with a dog, or having my morning coffee in the backyard, or sitting on my front steps watching as people go about their day. While I’m not a beach person (mostly because I burn in about 35 seconds unless I’m slathered in SPF20000), I do enjoy walking the shoreline in late afternoon or early morning.
- When I pay attention, I notice my listening preferences tend much more towards light, bright happy music in summer. I suspect my entire mood is affected by the warm sunny days and it reflects in my music choices.
- I want my food prepared as simply as possible! Summer isn’t roasts and stews; no, it’s simply seasoned items on the grill with light fresh accompaniments.
I’m sure there are more ways in which summer separates itself from spring and fall, but I’d love to hear from you! What makes it summer for you? Enjoy a roundup of the Weekend Tops plus today’s, then join me in the comments!

My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. It is comments like this one by KLWhite that continue to amplify my respect for folks who served our military. Great info! From Joe Pac’s I am real sure Russian artillery is in real big trouble - but what do you MOS 13 guys think?
