The Missoula Art Museum (MAM), in Missoula, Montana, was founded in 1975, and is one of the leading contemporary art museums in the Intermountain West. One of the recent exhibitions was An Unnatural History: Animal Images in the MAM Collection. Included in this exhibition were several American Indian artists.
According to MAM:
“Indigenous artists often depict animals that are culturally significant or as a way to make commentary on contemporary society.”
