A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Have you ever been refused service?
In 1989, my first partner Craig and I took a road trip from San Francisco all the way to Victoria, British Columbia along Highway 1. We were young and in love and the trip was magic. The stunning scenery combined with the excellent people we met along the way made it the best trip we had taken together up to that point. That is, until we arrived in the town of Port Angeles, Washington. It was our destination for the night before we were to take a car ferry to Victoria across the Strait of Juan de Fuca the next morning.
When we finally got to the town the sun was setting. We had reserved our hotel a month in advance. It wasn't anything fancy — cheep and cheerful, and it had been recommended to us. We shlepped our bags into the lobby to be greeted by a thin, pinched woman in her mid-50s. As she sized us up, you could visibly see her welcoming demeanor change as she stiffened. Craig approached and told her we had a reservation. We had requested one king size bed.
Back in those days, if you wanted to guarantee a reservation you booked through a travel agency. That meant that we were given a piece of paper from this hotel showing a hold on Craig's credit card as was their policy. Even so, she declared there was no reservation under that name. While I don't remember the exact conversation Craig had with her these 26 years ago, it was made obvious that we weren't welcome because we were clearly a gay couple.
Craig, who remains a dear friend, is a gentleman from New Orleans who could charm a bee from out a bonnet. He put up with her bullshit without ever raising his voice. As this bigot stood there fuming at us, I clearly remember what happened next. Craig placed his hands on the counter, look her squarely in the eye and told her if we weren't given our room immediately, we would miss the morning ferry and spend our first morning in Port Angeles at the office of the local paper and chamber of commerce telling them about the welcome we received from her establishment.
We slept there that night. But I can tell you, I didn't tidy up the bed before checking out which is usually my custom.
So how about you? Have you ever been refused to be served?

Announcing Asheville, North Carolina as the location
for our next Regional Event! 9.26.15
Asheville, N.C. is the destination for September 26, 2015! DKos Asheville, the In-Real-Life group under the leadership of randallt, has been setting the example for other IRL groups across the nation regarding registering people to vote, getting out the vote, having a state open thread and setting up strategy conferences for their region. Because of this impressive leadership we've asked randallt to be the State Leader for all of North Carolina. We've got important work to do on the ground there and randallt has shown he's the person to make that happen.
All states are welcome to attend this event and if you do you can expect to meet Markos Moulitsas in person, as well as some of the Daily Kos staff. More details regarding this regional event will be shared in the future so please stay tuned to Connect! Unite! Act!
For now, SAVE THE DATE and spread the word!
navajo maintains the above event list. Kosmail her if you have any diaries
about your event or if you have changes or additions.
EVERYONE is welcome, tell us what you're working on,
share your show and tell, vent, whatever you want.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
