I listened to Representative Greg Steube (R - 17th District, FL), complaining about the plot by Dems to “take away your right to own any gun you want”, remoting in to a Judiciary Committee hearing on gun safety proposals: (it starts mid-sentence as Rep. Steube is speaking)
Here's a link to his fulminations for those who can't view the embedded video
As he plays with his three guns, he repeatedly loads and unloads each of his weapons while railing against the proposed ban on high-capacity magazines. At one point, he says:
“Here’s a gun I carry every single day to protect myself, my family, my wife, my home,”
This, to me, raises many questions I’d like to ask Rep. Steube. So, let’s see where he can clarify his statement(s):
1. Rep. Steube, you say you carry to protect yourself, wife, and family. My first question is – Have you EVER had to draw on someone to “protect yourself, your family or your wife”? (there is a corollary question, but it applies more to your word choice. Do you not consider your wife to be part of your family? Your statement makes her kind of an afterthought.)
2. You say you have three guns. Since you can’t use more than one at a time (unless you’re playing gunslinger at the OK Corral), why three? Can’t you reload in much the same time that you can grab another weapon in the heat of battle with nefarious forces? If you’re using them on alternate days, then why not 7? Then you can have a handgun for each day of the week. Such a deal.
3. Since you say you carry every day, have you ever had to pay a fine for bringing one of your weapons onto the Floor of the House? Or, do you obey the Congressional rules and leave it in your office (unloaded and locked)?
4. Assuming you do attend House sessions in person from time to time, if you’re carrying, how are you protecting your wife and family? You’re not physically there. If your family (I would believe, your wife) is then packing, then what she’s carrying is not really yours, now, is it? Oh, you bought it? Sounds as if it is sharing duties. Or are you possessive of your guns?
5. Assuming what I bring up in question #4, why the third gun? Do you keep it in a drawer somewhere (also unloaded and locked up)? What is its purpose?
6. You say you’re against the ban on high-capacity clips “because your weapons can’t use a smaller clip.” My question is, then:
Why did you purchase weapons that only take clips of greater than 10 rounds. You know, gun manufacturerts actually make weapons that easily accomodate those smaller clips that you show us falling out of your handguns. Are you afraid you’re going to get into a pistol duel with someone? Because deer, squirrels, ‘possums, rabbits, etc. don’t fight back with guns, last I checked.
7. Was it really necessary to perform your histrionics on a zoom session with your colleagues? Did it somehow indicate your manliness?
8. If you carry daily, what to do you do when you’re home, say sleeping? Is one of those weapons within easy reach? All “primed” and ready to go, sitting on the nightstand, because, you never know; an intruder may attack you with his gun at night when you’re supposed to be sleeping? Or do you practice safe gun ownership and store ALL your guns safely?
9. Do you train regularly with all of your guns, practicing gun range safety protocols?
As I said, Soooo many questions. I’m sure DKOS readers can come up with many more.
