Received this e-mail today from State Senator Jeff Jackson’s (D. NC) U.S. Senate campaign:
It’s been a difficult week for the LGBTQ+ community in North Carolina. If you are struggling and need someone to speak to, please reach out to the LGBT National Hotline at 888-843-4564.
Last week, a video surfaced of North Carolina’s Lieutenant Governor saying hateful, discriminatory things about the LGBTQ+ community.
A quick warning – what he said was abhorrent and could be painful. If you aren’t prepared to read it, please consider skipping the next two paragraphs.
Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson said: “There’s no reason anybody, anywhere in America should be telling children about transgenderism, homosexuality, any of that filth. Yes, I called it filth.”
He has since doubled down on his derogatory remarks stating, “I said what I said and I believe what I said.”
I try to run a positive campaign, focused on what we can accomplish to move North Carolina forward. But when someone says something objectively hateful and discriminatory, particularly when that person is an elected official, you have a moral obligation to call that out.
Mark Robinson’s attacks on the LGBTQ community make him unqualified to hold the second-highest office in our state. He should resign.
Democratic lawmakers in the state House and the state Senate, local organizations, the Human Rights Campaign, and the White House have all joined voices to stand up to Robinson and his hateful comments.
My Republican opponents haven't. It’s not surprising, but it is disappointing and unacceptable.
To LGBTQ people across our state and country, please know you deserve to be welcomed and accepted.
I’m honored to stand with you in the fight for equality and justice.
– Jeff
