Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson is one of the worst Republicans in Congress. He’s relatively quiet on social media and doesn’t speak to the press all that much, so he doesn’t make the headlines that loudmouths like Rep. Matt Gaetz and Sen. Tom Cotton make, but the policies and investigations he’s pursued are more dangerous than any rhetoric.
Johnson is a Russian tool and a driving force behind both the Trump cover-up and the effort to slander Joe Biden as some kind of… honestly I’m not sure, Ukrainian national or something? Anyway, he’s been especially bad on COVID-19, saying that Americans “overreacted” while Wisconsin became one of the country’s worst viral hot spots and working as hard as he could to straight-up stop people from getting more stimulus money. Now, as we get closer to a desperately needed COVID vaccine, Johnson has scheduled a Tuesday Senate hearing that will star one of the most notorious anti-vaxxers in the country.
Everything you need to know about Johnson is right here:
Now, about that anti-vaxxer pannel happening tomorrow, here’s how the NY Times describes it:
A doctor who is skeptical of coronavirus vaccines and promotes the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a Covid-19 treatment will be the lead witness at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on Tuesday, prompting criticism from Democrats who say Republicans should not give a platform to someone who spreads conspiracy theories.
Dr. Jane M. Orient is the executive director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, a group that opposes government involvement in medicine and views federal vaccine mandates as a violation of human rights.
“A public health threat is the rationale for the policy on mandatory vaccines. But how much of a threat is required to justify forcing people to accept government-imposed risks?” Dr. Orient wrote in a statement to the Senate last year, calling vaccine mandates “a serious intrusion into individual liberty, autonomy and parental decisions.”
It’s truly unconscionable. Thankfully, Johnson’s term is up in 2022 and there’s already a great Democrat running to kick him out of office. I’m so inspired by this Democrat (Tom Nelson!) that I’m volunteering for his campaign — I wrote and produced the video above. All the hours working on it were very worth it because I really believe in what he’s doing (and just how awful Johnson is!).
