As someone who lives roughly 45 minutes from Midtown Manhattan, I rarely have the need to sleep overnight in the city. The number of times I have slept in the city is less than 10. In addition, only one of those times was in a hotel room. That happened to be the first time I ever slept overnight in the city. It was back when I was in college.
My friend and I decided to play in a bridge tournament in Midtown for the day. We both had to be up early the next morning. Him for work and me to see a taping of One Life to Live. Because the evening game ended around 10pm, it didn’t make sense for us to travel back home and the come right back to the city early the next morning. My friend and I got a hotel room on West 57th St near Broadway. While I do not remember the name of the hotel, I do remember the room. It was what someone might think would be a typical old school NYC hotel room would look like. The room was long and narrow with two full size beds and very little other furniture other than the absolute necessities including a small television on a TV stand. The bathroom had a shower/tub combo and you flushed the toilet by pulling a chain on the tank that was placed just under the ceiling. I thought that was the coolest part of the room.
I decided to write this diary this week because this month I will triple the number of times I have spent in a hotel room in the city this month by spending two more nights (one night each trip) in the city. Next week, I meeting some friends for dinner and hadn’t planned on staying overnight, but when I was in the city last week to see Funny Girl, my mom, sister and I decided to go around a by tickets to a bunch of shows we want to see. The first show for which we bought tickets was the play Take Me Out. The date of the play happens to be the day after my dinner. Rather than come just to sleep, I decided I would book a room and stroll around or visit a museum while waiting for my family to come in for the show.
One of the other shows for which we purchased tickets is The Music Man which we bought for the matinee on Father’s Day. My sister wants to see the Michael Jackson musical, so she went to purchase those tickets for her and mom and ended up buying them for the night before. Because of that, my mom thought it would be fun to stay overnight in the city. I was given the task of finding a reasonably priced place to stay in Midtown. One of the cheaper options was the Hotel Edison so named because Thomas Edison famously turned on the marquee lights for the first time. The other reason I picked that hotel was because my mother was always telling us about the time her family came to the city to stay there and see a Broadway show. She is from upstate NY so it’s not as if they were going very far. What I didn’t know was the show they saw was the original production of The Music Man with Robert Preston. That was over 60 years ago. It will be a nice trip for her.
After over two years of not seeing shows and very few trips into the city, June will be a big month for city visits for me. I am very happy about that.
